School Bus Demo Derby to Rock Riverhead Saturday July 19th

One of the most popular events ever staged over the 65 year history of Riverhead Raceway will return to Barbara & Jim Cromarty’s historic race track Saturday July 19th when they present a School Bus Demolition Derby which will again rock the track right down to its core. A full slate of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series stock car racing will be presented featuring a 35-lap NASCAR Modified main event as well the daring Figure Eight racers starting at 6:00 pm.

The shear energy that the full size 13-ton full size School Buses provide when they collide is a collective amazing sight as well sound as the ground shakes from the impact and a thunder explodes around the track. Cult hero “Cheesebox” Michael Rommeney of Maspeth will again lead the School Bus demo daredevils into action and it is expected the fans will again chant during the event “Cheesebox, Cheesebox” over and over again. The buses are provided by long time Riverhead Raceway marketing partner Gershow Recycling of Medford and as recent as four weeks ago were transporting children on Long Island back and forth to school! Numerous other past School Bus Demolition Derby stars are expected to compete along with Rommeney.

The 2014 NASCAR Modified championship chase has entered the second half of the season and among those expected to chase the gold in the 35-lap main event include defending champion Howie Brode of East Islip. Brode will come to the race as the current championship leader and will be challenged by the likes of Tom Rogers Jr. of Riverhead, Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, Ct., Dave Sapienza of Riverhead, Eddie Brunnhoelzl III of Levittown, Jason Agugliaro of Islip, Kyle Ellwood of Riverhead, Vinny Biondolillo of Farmingville, Ken Darch of Riverhead and Jeffrey Goodale of Riverhead among others.

Warming up the crowd for the School Bus Demo will be those daring Figure Eight drivers in a 15-lap contest with such stars as Roger Maynor of Bay Shore, defending champion Ken Hyde Jr. of Medford, Tom Rogers Jr., CJ Lehmann of Mastic Beach and Scott Pedersen of Shirley just a few of the names going after the win.

The Blunderbusts and Legend Race Cars will both be in action for 20-lap feature events with the Legend racing for the Jos. M Troffa & Sons Landscape & Mason Supplies trophy. The East Setauket based and family run Jos. M Troffa are in their second year as a seasonal sponsor for the Legend Race Cars and are leaders in the landscape and mason supply industry on Long Island. The 4/6-Cylinder Trucks will complete the card.
