Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 & School Bus Figure 8 Highlight June 4th Action at Riverhead

Saturday night June 4th Riverhead Raceway will again honor three of the most successful and popular drivers to ever strap into a NASCAR Modified with the annual running of the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77. The trio separately as well collectively played a major role in the rich heritage of short track racing not only on Long Island but as well in the Northeast. The card will be highlighted by the return of the Spectator Drags and a School Bus Figure Eight race.

One of the first traditions new track owners Eddie & Connie Partridge and Tom Gatz ensured the continuation of was the running of the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek Memorial 77. Eddie’s career path in racing found him serving as a valued team member of “Charging” Charlie Jarzombek for many season. Aside from his five track titles, Charlie also remains atop the all time win list at the track with 63 victories.

NASCAR Hall of Fame member Richie Evans  was a popular visitor to the three tracks of Long Island winning some 20 times, 17 at Islip Speedway, twice at Freeport with his lone Riverhead Raceway tally coming in August of 1985. “The Rapid Roman” was a nine time NASCAR National Modified champion.

While “Tiger” Tom Baldwin may not have racked up the stats like his two contemporaries Tom left as big an imprint on the landscape of NASCAR Modified racing with his straight forwardness and sharp wit. Many teams on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour looked to Tom to act as a conduit between the sanctioning body and them. “The Show” as many also dubbed Tom was an 11-time Riverhead victor.

Ryan Preece of Berlin, Ct. won the 2015 edition of the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek Memorial but with the Xfinity Series having a 1:00 pm race at Pocono Raceway his status for the 2016 race remains uncertain. John Fortin Sr. of Holtsville chased Preece to the line last year and he along with defending NASCAR Modified champion Tom Rogers Jr. of Riverhead will be out for the prestigious win. Howie Brode of East Islip is a multi time past winner of the 77 and will be tough to beat as will opening night winner Shawn Solomito of Center Moriches. Other driver who will bear watching include, Dave Brigati, Kyle Soper, Vinny Biondolillo, Jason Agugliaro, Chuck Steuer, John Fortin Jr. and Ken Darch among others.

For the first time in many years the Spectator Drags return to Riverhead Raceway for the June 4th program. The event features fans in their street legal and registered vehicles racing in a one on one single elimination contest. Capping the night off with be a wild and unpredictable School Bus Figure Eight race as the 13-ton machines try to navigate the tricky Figure Eight course.
