Doubleheader Opening Weekend This Saturday and Sunday
Another successful round of pre-season practice was completed at Barbara & Jim Cromarty’s Riverhead Raceway this past Saturday afternoon for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and Enduro stock cars. With all the testing and tuning now complete attention turns to opening weekend this Saturday and Sunday, May 4th & 5th. The NASCAR stock cars will compete in a seven division, eight feature event program Saturday evening at 5:30 pm, while Sunday afternoon will find five great Enduro main events starting at 12:30 pm.
NASCAR Modified teams geared up for the opening night Twin 30 feature events this coming Saturday and among those with transponders Howie Brode of East Islip was quickest late in the day with a lap of 11.969. David Roys of Coram was second quickest among those with transponders with a lap of 12.110 with Vincent Biondolillo 12.110, Jason Agugliaro, 12.204 and Dave Brigati 12.239 completing the top five. Defending NASCAR Modified champion Shawn Solomito, Tom Rogers Jr., Eddie Brunnhoelzl III, John Beatty, Bill Park, Jerry Solomito Jr., Chris McGuire and several others were on hand minus transponders but all seemed to be getting around rather well.
“The Natural” Timmy Solomito of Islip is the defending opening night winner of the Twin 30 NASCAR Modified features from 2012 and he’ll make his first start this Saturday night for the Eastport Feeds team of Wayne Anderson. With an open weekend on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 2011 Riverhead Raceway champion Justin Bonsignore of West Islip is expected to be on hand as will Ryan Preece of Berlin, Ct. in the Bill Park owned entry and Eric Goodale of Riverhead is also expected to compete.
Rounding out the Saturday night half of opening weekend will be the Late Models, Figure Eights, Charger, Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks and Legend Race Cars with the Legends and NASCAR Modifieds qualifying via time trials.
For this Saturday only the pit gates will open at 11:00 am so Riverhead Raceway officials can get all pit parking and transponder distribution in order, practice will start at 2:00 pm and there will be no “extra” practices permitted due to a tight time schedule.
As for Sunday the popular Enduro racing will continue for the 29th consecutive season at Riverhead Raceway featuring the Grand Enduro and 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro starting at 12:30 pm. Two exciting 8-Cylinder Enduro races will also be presented along with a 4/6-Cylinder Car Enduro featuring some great side by side, wall to wall racing excitement.
