The Suffolk Association of Figure
Eight Racing will hold their annual awards banquet on Friday
night April 4th at the Smithtown Landing Country Club
on the scenic north shore of Long Island. Roger Maynor of Bay
Shore will be honored as the 2007 SAFER champion for what can
only be described as a career year for the veteran multi-time
champion and leading all-time winner in Riverhead Raceway
history.
Thought of by many as the best
party in auto racing, the SAFER bash returns to the Smithtown
Landing Country Club after a one-year absence. The dance
features an open bar from 8:00 pm until 12:30 am, with a
generous hot and cold buffet also available from the award
winning culinary staff of the Smithtown Landing Country Club.
Aside from crowning Roger Maynor
the 2007 SAFER champion, the top ten in SAFER points will be
recognized and of course there will be a host of SAFER Special
Awards, which are plentiful annually. Perhaps the highlight of
the special awards will be the induction of nominees into the
Ernie Maynor Hall of Fame. The nominees include “The Dean” Bill
Steen of Oakdale, who just retired from racing in 2007 after
some four decades of racing the “X”. “Racin” Bobby Mason a
former Figure Eight driver from Islip Speedway in the 70’s and
80’s Mason remains active these days through his Aces
Landscaping business by sponsoring race teams at Riverhead
Raceway.
The late “Jumping” Johnny Kraft
who passed away in 2007 will be remembered when JTL Enterprises
hands out the John Kraft Memorial trophies to the top three
newcomers in the Blunderbust class, Donny Oliver, Rob Bader and
Jessica Larsen.
Tickets are priced at $65 per
ticket and for further information call Joe Saraceno at
631-981-0569 or e-mail Tom Kraft at
krftracing9@aol.com. With the SAFER affair coming together
at the last minute the club will need to gather a head count
ASAP.
