DONNY LIA ENTERS THE MODIFIED ROOKIE RANKS FOR 2001...

After a stellar year in the Legend Cars division, Merrick’s Donny Lia has announced plans to move up to the feature division of Riverhead Raceway, the Modifieds...
Lia Motorsports, Inc. recently purchased the main and backup car from the Vigliarolo Racing team, both of which have a championship season on them.  The cars feature a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo body and engines from ERD Racing Engines.
“[The move up a division was] a little sooner than [I] expected to move up, but with the Legend Cars not being back at Riverhead next year, and Frank retiring, it was just good timing to move and also get into some good equipment.”
Donny Lia has been only racing since the summer of 1999, when he took out one of his friend and fellow racer, Larry Altholtz, cars for a spin and he was hooked to the sport from there on.  However, do not think for a minute that Lia has minimal racing experience, for he and Lia Motorsports have been traveling extensively racing, including tracks all the way to Florida to New England.
“I haven’t been racing long at all, but I have been fortunate to make the right moves and gain a lot of experience in a short time.  In 1999 alone we raced about 22 races – that was about every weekend from the day we started.  We just went traveling anywhere to race,” Lia commented, “I’ve run a lot of races at Wall (NJ) Stadium, Lowes Motor Speedway in North Carolina, and Riverside Park Speedway in Massachusetts.  Also, [I’ve raced] Old Dominion Speedway in Virginia, Waterford (CT) Speedbowl, Mahoning Valley Speedway in Pennsylvania, Twins Fountains Speedway in Tennessee, and Citrus County Speedway in Florida.”
In the Legend Cars division at Riverhead Raceway this past year, Lia was in contention for the win every race and the championship until then end.  At the end of the year Donny Lia finished 3rd in the final standings, with three wins, seven top 5’s, and eight top 10’s.
With the jump up to the Modified division from the entry level Legend Cars, Lia Motorsports, Inc. is looking for sponsors for the 2001 campaign.  Anyone interested in joining an up and coming, 1st rate team; contact Lia Motorsports at LMIRacing@aol.com.  Also, anybody interested in Legends equipment contact LMI through that e-mail address as well.
For 2001, Donny Lia is looking to carry over his success from the Legends but take it one step at a time as well.
“Our goals are simple and are probably what you would expect for a new driver and team just getting started in any racing division.  That is, to learn from our mistakes, work as a team, and do whatever it takes to run up front.  And for me personally, it is to take it one step at a time, and be patient and smart,” Lia commented on his 2001 goals.  Lia also plans to attempt the two tour shows at Riverhead and at the end of the year attend Thompson Speedway for its Featherlite Modified Series race.
Donny Lia has shown in the Legend Cars that he learns quickly and accomplishes success in a short period of time.  For 2001, Lia should once again quickly learn the steep rookie learning curve and soon after accomplish many great things as he has done so before in his short but successful racing career.
