SAFER Honors Mike Mujsce

The Suffolk Association of Figure Eight Racing announced recently that they would host their annual awards banquet on Sunday April 7th at the Smithtown Landing Country Club where they will honor Mike Mujsce of Westhampton Beach as the 2012 SAFER champion. Mike’s championship season at Riverhead Raceway was the first of his career and he’ll receive the coveted SAFER Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Long Island Driver’s Cup at the ceremony.

Mike Mujsce, an auto repair shop business owner, had come close over the years to taking the title and in 2012 he was finally able to grab the brass ring with his Bill Beener Tree Service team. Aside from his on track accomplishments Mike has aided his fellow SAFER competitors by loaning them both advice and parts for their cars so they could get to the track and race. Mike will be joined on stage when he receives his 2012 SAFER Championship trophies and the Big Brothers & Big Sister’s of Long Island Driver’s Cup by his car owner and fiancĂ©e Deborah Anderson.

Arne Pedersen of Mastic Beach was runner-up in the 2012 SAFER standings after winning the crown in 2011, while Tom “The Altar Boy” Ferrara of Patchogue was third in a team car to Mike Mujsce.

Annually at the SAFER banquet plenty of special awards are dished out and this affair will be no different. There of course will be the monthly SAFER Achievement Awards, Rookie of the Year and the coveted Billy Webster Memorial SAFER Mechanic of the Year.

Also taking place on April 7th will be the induction ceremonies of several deserving individuals into the Ernie Maynor Memorial SAFER Hall of Fame with the class of 2012 to be announced at the banquet.

Dubbed many years ago by Riverhead Raceway announcer Bob Finan as the “best banquet in short track racing” the SAFER banquet for the first time in its long rich history will move to a Sunday afternoon and evening affair in an effort to make it easier for all to attend. The Suffolk Association of Figure Eight Racing has been in existence for over 5 decades since the Islip Speedway days and serves for the betterment of Figure Eight racing on Long island.

Tickets for the SAFER banquet are priced at $60 per person that includes a four hour open bar, appetizers, a full buffet, music and of course the awards ceremony. For further information you can visit the SAFER Facebook page or call Joe Saraceno during the business day at Indy 3000 Fast Lube, 631-447-5823.
