New Format Announced For NASCAR Mod Twin 49’s Aug. 8th at Riverhead

Riverhead Raceway co-chief stewards Mike Cappiello & Steve Tooker announced this week that a new format will be in place on Saturday night August 8th for the NASCAR Modified Twin 49 feature events on Sunoco Race Fuels night. The Twins were originally set to be 50-lap events but now will be 49-laps each to celebrate the life and racing career of Chris Young, Barbara and Jim Cromarty announced Thursday. A full card of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing will join the Twin 49’s along with a hard hitting Demolition Derby.

Normally NASCAR Modified teams are permitted 4 new tires weekly but for the Twin 49’s teams will be able to purchase 5 race tires. Qualifying will be via time trials as per usual with the top 8 from time redrawing for starting position on track. The race will be an impound event. When the first 49-lapper is completed the race winner will head to victory lane for a quick photo opportunity and the entire field will report to the impound area in the pits.

The Super Pro Trucks will run their 20-lap main event in between the NASCAR Modified Twin 49s. While in impound, between races, Modified teams can add their 5th tire on the car, as well as rotate the remaining tires during the break. Teams wanting to change an additional tire or tires for ANY reason will be penalized one lap for doing so, no exceptions. While in impound the top four finishers from the first 49 will redraw for their starting positions in the second race.

Chris Young passed away suddenly on the morning of July 18th just two days after undergoing double knee replacement. An autopsy report showed Chris, 62 passed away from a massive heart attack. Young is ranked 4th on the all time Riverhead Raceway NASCAR Modified win list with 33 visits to victory lane. Both fellow competitors and fans recall Chris as an old school hardnosed racer who got the most out of each and every race he competed in.

All feature event winners on August 8th will take home Sunoco Race Fuel trophies as Riverhead Raceway recognizes the Official Fuel of NASCAR. Sunoco also serves as the Official Fuel of Riverhead and is distributed by Eddie & Connie Partridge at the track. Joining the NASCAR Modifieds and Super Pro Trucks are the Figure Eights, Legend Race Cars plus at 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro.

Once all the stock car racing has been completed the Demolition Derby daredevils will take to the track and the question will then become can anyone stop the winning streak of “Mad” Mike Smith? The tested tough Demo veteran has won all three Bone Stock Demolition Derby events so far in 2015.
